How did we get into this industry without being located in a traditional financial center? Opportunities and small businesses germinate and grow by fulfilling a need. In the late 1980s the investment advisory industry was moving away from bank trust departments and in the direction of independent investment advisory firms. As these firms grew the operational and administrative issues of handling smaller accounts became onerous. Nottingham sought to solve these issues for investment advisors and investment structure sponsors, and has been doing so for over 27 years. Nottingham has become one of the largest independently-owned fund administration and accounting firms in the United States.

Nottingham: Company History

  • 1989

    After spending about 18 months looking into vehicles that could pool smaller accounts together, such as common trust funds, collective group trusts, investment partnerships and unit investment trusts, Nottingham determined that mutual funds registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 made the most sense. The first three funds were organized and went effective July 3, 1989.

  • 1993

    In what seemed a bit risky at the time, and some in senior management thought was an unwise investment, Nottingham brought in top end information technology staff to improve reporting and web functionality. It turned out to be one of the best moves in our history (and those negative senior managers are now gone). Nottingham was one of the first administrators to offer Internet portal customization as a value-added service.

  • 1996

    At the request of one of the world’s most innovative investors Sir John Templeton, and sitting in his office in the Bahamas, Nottingham was asked “can you help set up one of these new hedge funds”. We said yes, we did, and have been involved with non-registered funds since.

  • 1996

    One of the largest investment consulting firms in the U.S. approached Nottingham with the idea of unitizing and combining investment programs from multiple religious affiliate hospital groups. The programs helped create significant efficiencies as Catholic hospital groups merged together throughout the late 1990s. Nottingham has since used the same capability with several church investment pools creating efficiency and enhanced investment options for their Diocese and national church investment programs.

  • 1997

    Nottingham was asked by a large bank custodian if we could help with unitized accounting for a unique insurance investment vehicle. We accepted the challenge and enjoyed working with that client for over 15 years, until their processes were brought in house after a merger.

  • 1998

    Nottingham was approached by another bank custodian to help create private mutual fund type investment structures for one of the largest state utility agencies in the South. This relationship has continued to grow and prosper, and has been viewed as a model for other state utility agencies elsewhere.

  • 1999

    Another request from one of the east coast’s largest banks (prior to its merger into Wells Fargo), Nottingham was asked if unitization of a state treasury investment operation was possible. We accepted the challenge, and have since leveraged a unique knowledge of state and local government investment pools nationwide. Non-profit and state and local government investment pools now account for over 35% of Nottingham-administered assets.

  • 2001

    Nottingham added in-house legal and tax/audit departments to help with the growing compliance and financial reporting requirements, and to add both a buffer and cost savings process for interacting with outside legal and audit counsel. Internal preparation of prospectuses, annual reports, initial prospectuses, periodic filings, financial statements and coordination of board meetings.

  • 2004

    Nottingham was an early adopter among similar sized administrators in submitting internal controls to SAS 70 (now SOC 1) audits.

  • 2011

    Nottingham was asked to help form an innovative and now quite successful pooled investment program to serve county, local and special districts in California. This innovative structure is now being rolled out nationally, with Nottingham playing a central role in both organization and operational structure.
